If You Want A Team Of Leaders You Must Become One First

datePosted on 19:33, January 22nd, 2010 by Patrick Keith

John Maxwell, a leading author on leadership, wrote “The number one motivational principle in the world is: people do what people see.” So if you want a team of leadership you must become one first.

Many people believe that leaders are born and not made. While it’s true that some people seem to be born with leadership traits, it’s more common for leadership skills and abilities to be developed. Research Abraham Lincoln’s career and you’ll find a great example of that.

But where do you start? Great leaders are generally great communicators. This doesn’t necessarily mean that they are great orators though. To be a good communicator you must first be a good listener.

There is not one person who doesn’t appreciate a leader who will take the time to listen them. It’s very motivational when someone gives you that respect and that respect is usually reciprocated. Great leadership starts here. Plus it is something anayone who wants to develop leadership slills can start to do right now.

Great leaders take responsibility and hold others accountable. Any kind of team flourishes when they know that the “buck stops at the leader” and that the leader will insist that team members meet the set standards.

The best way to develop future leaders is to hold them accountable for their actions and to not accept any less than what’s expected. Of course as the leader you have to hold yourself to the same expectations. For example, it’s hard to expect others to be on time for meetings if you’re not.

The best leaders involve others in what’s going on and then empower them to play a role in problem solving and achieving success. When you show confidence in your team by seeking their contribution you build a sense of pride that enables you to reach the shared goals quicker.

According to the book The One Minute Manager, the number one motivator of people is “Feedback on results. It’s what keeps us going.” Great leaders understand this and make sure that the team is always aware of where they stand.

When goals are set, a plan that includes a time frame to achieve it is put in place. When you give your team consistent updates on how they’re doing you’re giving the necessary information to keep them on target.

It wouldn’t be fair to notify an employee at the end of the year that he didn’t receive his bonus if he was never given any progress reports long the way. Great leaders communicate and give their team members opportunities for success.

They also give them opportunities to fail. Leaders understand the importance of that. This is how we learn best. They’re there to help pick them and dust them off, too. http://stevelauri.com/

Distinguishing Yourself Through Leadership

datePosted on 15:22, December 22nd, 2008 by Keith Stieneke

Leadership can be thought of as a capacity to define oneself to others in a way that clarifies and expands a vision of the future. – Edwin H. Friedman

Well, it’s finally here and before Christmas also. I am referring to the last installment about Rajesh Setty’s steps to distinguishing yourself summarized from his excellent book Beyond Code: How to Distinguish Yourself in 9 Simple Steps.

The last step in the process that is also the last step in what Rajesh refers to as the outer game to distinguishing yourself is leadership.

Rajesh uses metaphors when dealing with this topic. He states “rocks in the path can be a defining moment.”  Leadership happens when someone deals with the rocks. It is not tied to any position. A leader is simply someone who will go beyond the call of duty, which gaps to fill in an organization. Rajest suggests to be ready for your leadership moments, as only those who are ready for such moments will emerge as leaders.

You do not lead by hitting people over the head – that’s assault, not leadership. – Dwight D. Eisenhower

Creating Morale As A Leader

datePosted on 13:17, September 11th, 2008 by Keith Stieneke

Do you have people who follow you as their leader, such as church group, business organization, or students? If so you know that an important part of leadership is to create morale. Morale is the spirit of a group that makes the members want the group to succeed as well as a state of individual psychological well-being based upon a sense of confidence, usefulness and purpose. What are some steps that you can take to create or to boost morale?

1. One step is to create a significance for the group, whether it’s an organization, a team, or a company. Just being a part of an organization is no longer enough anymore. Each member must feel he or she is a part of something important, and is not just putting in time.

2. It is important to help each person see himself or herself as having a significant role, no matter what it might be. Everyone has to understand that he or she is essential to the groups success, that it’s the sum of all the parts that make up the whole.

3. Recognize the people who get less attention in the group because they are not in the glamorous positions. The secretaries in the company, the substitutes in the team, the students who aren’t called on that often, yet always provide a correct answer. Thank them publicly for their unselfishness and their contribution and in front of their peers. That is their share of the lime-light.

4. Remember to maintain positive reinforcement for the effort people are giving. Always let them know you are aware of it and how much you appreciate it.

As you may have noticed in reading this short article about creating morale as a leader there is some redundancy in these steps. That is because more than anything else positive reinforcement of your group members is important to being a good leader. All of these steps have one thing in common and  just choose to reinforce the fact that the members of your organization, group, classroom are important and need to be made aware of that. Keep this in mind at all times and practice it and you will make a good leader.
