Most people over the holiday have gained a couple pounds. And now that the New Year is beginning the gyms are going to be bursting at the seams. Everyone is going to have resolutions and goals to drop some pounds and gain more muscle. But depending on your diet you may remain the same size or even gain weight.

The holiday festivities may have resulted in tighter pants but it doesn’t have to stay that way. If you are on a diet and track your calories on a daily basis rather than a weekly basis you may be missing the boat. In order to achieve the best results you need to watch and keep track of what you eat and be sure to work out.

But here’s where the problem is. If you’re eating healthy during the week and then eat whatever you want on the weekend you can eat up to 400 extra calories on Saturday and Sunday than you do on a typical weekday. So if you’re eating anything want on the weekdays to make up for what you felt you missed on weekdays the diet will fail.

It will also fail if you are counting your calories and keeping track of what you ate on a daily basis. If you eat a large breakfast then hold back on on lunch you’re probably going to eat more calories than you intended to at dinner. Because of the fact that you realized you skimped on lunch so you can eat more for dinner in order to make up for it..

But if you want to drop weight and maintain it then you should keep track of your eating on a weekly instead of a daily basis. Professor J. Jeffrey Inman at the University of Pittsburgh remarked “If you monitor your intake during the week you can make sure you don’t go too crazy on the weekends.” The idea is that you can keep better track of your eating on a weekly basis because you’re looking at the big picture instead of getting caught up in all the little details. And you can better monitor your food gorging on the weekends.

In America the saying is “live to eat” but in the rest of the world it’s “eat to live. Regrettably eating is a huge part of our traditions and it’s affected the obesity rates in the U.S. In the last thirty years the U.S. has sharply increased in the number of obese Americans from 15 percent in 1976 to 33 percent in 2003 and it’s not getting better, only worse.

Government and health officials have tried to bring awareness to the issue. They believe that the shortage of exercise and growing number of fast food chains have led to an increase in obesity rates. The eating habits of Americans have changed for the worse and it is affecting everyone’s health.

Heart disease, diabetes, and many other health problems are related to diet and weight. The danger of developing these diseases is greater for individuals that don’t take care of their bodies. You are constantly bombarded with terrible commercials and infomercials about strange gadgets that will help you lose all kinds of weight in no time at all (results not typical) or for some new pill that lets you eat whatever you want (not evaluated by the FDA). So, this guide will help you cut through all the hype and lose weight safely. First, what to avoid:

1.Pills – if there was truly a safe pill that helped you healthily lose weight, there would not be any obese people. That’s just not something that wouldn’t make international news. So, if it’s a pill, skip it. The only exception to this is multivitamins, which aren’t really a pill but look similar. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is, and you work too hard for your money to throw it away.

2.Gadgets – While these might work, most just collect dust. If you don’t exercise now, will that new device really make that much of a difference? Be honest with yourself, and don’t waste money on something you won’t use.

3.Diets – Almost all diets just aren’t good for you. If you truly want to know How to lose weight fast and safely, here’s what to look out for in an unsafe diet. If it only lets you eat one type of food, skip it. If you can’t eat a certain nutrient (such as carbs), skip it. You will lose weight, but your body needs those nutrients. 2.Reduce the number of calories that you eat – this doesn’t mean that you have to eat less, in fact if you eat a lot of fast food you can probably eat more. Just figure out how many calories you take in daily and reduce it by 10%, and try to eats food with less fat (that where the most calories are). You’ll be surprised how much more food you can get if it’s low fat!

3.Burn more calories – start off with little things, like taking the stairs instead of the elevator. It will make a difference over time. If you want, do jumping jacks during commercial breaks when you watch TV. The more TV you watch, the more calories this trick will help you with.
